Buddy is heading back to the basketball court in the first teaser for Air Bud Returns.

The upcoming family film introduces Jacob, a 14-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a basketball star while dealing with the loss of his father.

Jacob and his mother move into his father’s childhood home in Fernfield, where he discovers an old VHS tape marked “Air Bud.” He later learns that his father once played for the Timberwolves alongside the original basketball-playing golden retriever.

His life begins to change after he meets a stray golden retriever and names him Buddy. The pair form a close bond and begin learning how to play basketball together.

Jacob and Buddy eventually bring together a new team of unlikely players as they pursue a championship and attempt to rebuild the Timberwolves’ legacy.

The teaser places Buddy’s basketball abilities at the centre of the action, showing the golden retriever making shots, joining Jacob on the court and surprising those who doubt that a dog belongs in the game.

Two golden retrievers named Charlie and Summer share the role of Buddy. They were selected following a nationwide search that attracted thousands of submissions.

Air Bud Returns is written and directed by longtime franchise filmmaker Robert Vince and marks the franchise’s return to theaters for a new generation.

The film is being released by Cineverse in partnership with Air Bud Entertainment.

Air Bud Returns opens in theaters on January 22, 2027.
