Hayley Atwell has added another layer of mystery to one of the most discussed moments from the Avengers: Doomsday teaser.

The footage confirmed Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers and showed the former Captain America wearing a wedding ring before cradling a newborn baby. Marvel Studios did not identify the child or explain when and where the scene takes place.

During an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, Atwell was asked what the moment could mean for Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter.

“Whether that is a reality, a dream, a fantasy, or a warning, who knows?” Atwell said.

Her answer stops short of confirming that the baby belongs to Steve and Peggy. It also introduces the possibility that the peaceful family scene may not be happening exactly as it appears.

Marvel Studios has now confirmed that Atwell will return as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday. However, the studio has not revealed which version of Peggy will appear, how she reconnects with Steve or whether the baby is genuinely their child.

Steve’s original story appeared to conclude in Avengers: Endgame when he travelled into the past and remained there with Peggy. He later returned as an older man and passed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson.

Doomsday is bringing a younger Steve Rogers back into the story, creating new questions about timelines, alternate realities and the consequences of his decision to remain in the past.

For now, the baby’s identity and the true nature of the scene remain closely guarded parts of the movie’s story.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday will be released exclusively in theaters on December 18, 2026.
