Microsoft is testing a new Xbox feature designed to improve the speed and consistency of game installations and updates.

The feature introduces what Microsoft describes as a smart download client. Shortly after a game download begins, the system checks which Xbox content servers are available for the installation or update.

It then measures the connection speed offered by each available server pool and selects the fastest connection for that particular download.

The process does not happen only once. Xbox says the speed test will run periodically while the game is being installed or updated, allowing the client to continue using the fastest available connection throughout the process.

This could help players whose Xbox download speeds fluctuate or fail to use the full capacity of their internet connection. The improvement may be especially useful as modern game installations and major updates continue growing in size.

The smart download client is currently being tested through the Xbox Insider Program by members of the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring.

It appears in Xbox Update Preview build 2608.260719-2200. The same preview also includes stability and performance improvements, along with a fix for an issue that could prevent some game and app updates from completing installation.

Because the feature remains in testing, it is not currently available to every Xbox player. Microsoft has not announced when it will move into additional Insider rings or receive a wider public rollout.

The final performance improvement may also depend on factors such as a player’s internet connection, network traffic, storage speed and the availability of Xbox content servers in their region.
