The Simpsons Movie is marking 19 years since the animated family made its feature-length theatrical debut.

Released in the United States on July 27, 2007, the film followed Homer Simpson after he accidentally caused an environmental disaster that placed Springfield under a massive glass dome. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie were forced to leave town before returning to save their home.

The film brought the long-running television series to the big screen and became a major commercial success, earning more than $500 million worldwide.

Nearly two decades later, the Simpsons family is officially preparing to return to theaters in a new movie from 20th Century Studios. The sequel was originally announced for July 2027, but its theatrical release has since moved to September 3, 2027.

Plot details, the official title and the creative team behind the new film have not yet been fully revealed. The announcement artwork teased Homer’s return with a pink doughnut covered in number-two sprinkles and the message, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

The upcoming movie will mark the family’s first full theatrical adventure since the original film arrived in 2007.
