Christopher Nolan has confirmed that one of the most striking moments in The Odyssey happened completely by chance.

During a sea sequence featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, a group of real dolphins appeared beside the boat while the cameras were rolling. The animals were not added with CGI and were not originally planned as part of the scene.

Nolan explained that the production was filming Odysseus aboard a ship in rough water when the dolphins began moving through the waves beside him. The director described the shot as one of the moments he is most proud of in the film.

The unexpected footage reflects Nolan’s preference for filming on real locations and using practical elements whenever possible. Much of The Odyssey was shot across natural landscapes and open water rather than relying entirely on controlled studio environments.

The film follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. Its cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

The Odyssey opened in theaters on July 17, 2026.
