Marvel Comics is preparing for one of the biggest changes in its publishing history, with Stephen Wacker named as the company’s new editor-in-chief.
Wacker will replace C.B. Cebulski, who has led Marvel Comics since 2017. Cebulski will remain with the company and move to Japan, where he will serve as editor of Asia Originals.
The leadership change arrives alongside Marvel’s decision to relocate its comics and franchise division from New York City to Burbank, California. The move will place the publishing team closer to Marvel Studios, Disney, and the company’s wider film, television, and animation operations.
More than 100 employees currently based in New York are expected to be asked to relocate, with the transition planned over the next year.
The relocation marks the end of Marvel Comics’ nearly 90-year publishing presence in New York, a city deeply connected to the company’s history and many of its most recognizable characters, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers.
Wacker previously worked as an editor at Marvel and later held production roles across Marvel Animation and Marvel Television.
