Mojang Studios has officially raised the minimum and recommended system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition.

The updated specifications are intended to give players a more accurate idea of the hardware needed to run the modern version of Minecraft smoothly. Mojang explained that the game has expanded considerably over its more than 17-year history, with larger worlds, additional features and continuing technical improvements.

Under the new minimum requirements, Minecraft: Java Edition targets 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second using the Fast graphics preset.

The minimum setup now calls for 8GB of system RAM when using a dedicated graphics card or 12GB when using integrated graphics. Players also need a 64-bit system, a processor with at least four physical cores and a graphics processor supporting Vulkan 1.3 with at least 2GB of video memory.

Examples of minimum processors include the Intel Core i3-10100 and AMD Ryzen 3 3100. Minimum dedicated graphics options include the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 460 and Intel Arc A310 or newer equivalents.

The recommended requirements target 1080p at 60 frames per second using Minecraft’s Fancy graphics preset.

For that experience, Mojang recommends 16GB of system RAM, an Intel Core i5-12400, AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Apple M2 Pro processor.

Recommended graphics hardware includes the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, Intel Arc A580 or Apple M2 Pro, with approximately 6GB of video memory.

The recommended operating systems are Windows 11 64-bit, macOS 14 or newer, or a supported 64-bit Linux distribution.

Mojang says computers below the updated minimum specifications may still be able to launch Minecraft: Java Edition. However, smooth performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed on hardware that falls below the new baseline.

Players using older computers may experience reduced frame rates, visual problems, longer loading times or difficulty running future versions of the game.

The updated requirements are also connected to Minecraft’s continuing technical development. Mojang is preparing to move Java Edition away from OpenGL and toward Vulkan, although the company has not announced a final date for completing that transition.

The new system requirements went into effect on July 21, 2026. Players who already run Java Edition without performance problems may not notice an immediate difference, but the updated specifications provide a clearer target for new computers and future upgrades.
