Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has shared his view on the growing debate surrounding physical and digital video game releases.
Speaking alongside former Rockstar writer and radio personality Lazlow Jones during an IGN interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Houser said he does not have a strong personal preference between discs and downloads. However, he believes publishers should continue providing physical editions when players still want them.
“I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it,” Houser said.
Houser also acknowledged some of the advantages offered by digital distribution. He explained that the ability to update games and repair technical problems after launch has helped improve the overall quality of modern releases.
Jones expressed a similar balance between the two formats. He spoke about the familiar experience of receiving a physical game and placing the disc into a console, while also recognizing the convenience of quickly downloading games while travelling.
Their comments arrive as the industry continues moving toward digital distribution. Sony has announced plans to end new physical disc releases for PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028, prompting renewed discussions about ownership, accessibility, preservation and the future of physical game collections.
Houser co-founded Rockstar Games and worked as a writer and producer across major franchises including Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Bully and Max Payne. He left Rockstar in 2020 and later established Absurd Ventures, where he is currently developing new entertainment projects and video games.
Although Houser did not argue that physical releases should replace digital distribution, his position was clear: when there is meaningful customer demand for games on disc, companies should continue making that option available.
