Xbox has outlined an ambitious long-term goal to become one of the world’s largest entertainment platforms, reaching audiences far beyond traditional console gaming.
In an official company message, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said she wants Xbox to become one of the few companies capable of entertaining more than one billion people each day.
The target includes the company’s entire ecosystem rather than one billion people actively using an Xbox console every day.
Xbox’s reach extends across console hardware, Windows PC gaming, Game Pass, cloud streaming, mobile games and some of the entertainment industry’s largest franchises.
Those properties include Minecraft, Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Warcraft, Diablo, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Halo, Forza and Gears of War.
Xbox currently says it reaches more than 500 million players around the world.
Microsoft has separately described that figure as monthly active users across its gaming operations. It should not be confused with 500 million daily players.
An online report claimed Xbox was specifically targeting 500 million daily players by 2030, but that exact figure is not contained in the company’s official public announcements.
Xbox has instead declared daily active players its new primary measure of audience growth.
That means the company wants to measure how many people actively engage with Xbox games, services and communities each day rather than focusing mainly on console sales or Game Pass subscription totals.
Sharma has emphasized that Xbox consoles will remain an important part of the company’s future.
The company’s strategy describes hardware as the core of the Xbox ecosystem, supported by PC, mobile, streaming and services that extend its reach to additional players.
Xbox is also developing Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console platform.
Project Helix is intended to support Xbox console games and PC titles while giving players access to a broader and more flexible gaming ecosystem.
Microsoft’s expansion plans also rely heavily on Minecraft and mobile publisher King.
Mojang Studios and King now report directly to Sharma because the companies operate two of Xbox’s largest platforms by monthly active users.
Minecraft provides Xbox with a global game, social environment and creator platform that reaches children, families, dedicated players and content creators.
King gives the company access to a large mobile audience through games including Candy Crush Saga.
Call of Duty remains another major part of the strategy because it reaches players across Xbox, PlayStation and PC while supporting annual releases, Warzone and mobile content.
Xbox says more than one billion people already play its games each year across console, PC, mobile and streaming.
Those users reportedly generated approximately 72 billion hours of engagement during the company’s previous reporting period.
Reaching more than one billion people every day would be considerably more difficult than reaching that many players over an entire year.
The target may also include people engaging with Xbox-owned franchises through television, films, merchandise, creators and online communities rather than only people actively playing a video game.
Xbox properties have expanded into other forms of entertainment through productions based on Fallout, Minecraft, Halo and additional franchises.
Sharma has said the company’s future competition is for people’s attention across games, television, social platforms, creators and other entertainment formats.
The billion-person ambition arrives during a significant restructuring of Xbox.
Microsoft announced plans to reduce the Xbox workforce by approximately 3,200 positions during fiscal 2027 and move several studios into independent or new ownership.
The company is also simplifying management, narrowing its investment priorities and focusing more heavily on games and platforms capable of reaching large global audiences.
Despite the restructuring, Sharma said Xbox plans to invest as much in the business as it has in previous years, with tighter financial discipline and clearer priorities.
Xbox expects to return to player and revenue growth during fiscal 2027.
Its longer-term strategy calls for larger returns from major investments during fiscal years 2028 and 2029, followed by sustained growth and stronger profitability by 2030.
The company has not released a detailed calculation explaining how it would reach more than one billion people every day.
For now, the figure should be treated as a broad long-term ambition rather than a guaranteed audience forecast.
Xbox’s confirmed strategy is to strengthen its console business while reaching more players through PC, mobile, cloud gaming, Game Pass, major franchises and entertainment outside games.
