Prime Video has officially ordered a new live-action RoboCop television series, moving the long-running science-fiction franchise forward with an eight-episode first season.

The series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

Peter Ocko will serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer. His previous television work includes Lodge 49, Pushing Daisies and The Office.

James Wan will executive produce through Blumhouse Atomic Monster alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the company as a co-executive producer.

Ed Neumeier, who co-created and co-wrote the original 1987 RoboCop film, is also returning as an executive producer.

The official story follows a powerful technology company that convinces a city to place a robot on its police force. The machine carries the consciousness of a respected officer who died before being rebuilt as a cybernetic law-enforcement weapon.

That premise closely follows the foundation of the original film, which centered on Detroit police officer Alex Murphy being transformed into RoboCop by the corporation Omni Consumer Products.

The original RoboCop combined violent action with satire about corporate control, privatized policing, identity and the growing influence of technology.

James Wan said the new series will respect what made the original film important while creating something new for a modern audience.

Amazon MGM Studios described the franchise as more than an action property, pointing to its lasting commentary on technology, power and corporate influence.

The new project marks another television expansion for RoboCop, which has previously appeared in live-action and animated shows alongside films, comics and video games.

No actor has been announced for RoboCop, and Prime Video has not revealed when production will begin.

The RoboCop series will stream exclusively on Prime Video. A release date has not yet been announced.
