Disney is developing a new live-action movie centered on Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.

Colman Domingo and playwright-director Robert O’Hara are in early talks to co-write the screenplay. The project remains in its earliest stages, and writing deals have not yet been completed.

Rather than directly recreating the events of Disney’s 2009 animated film, the movie is expected to tell an original story inspired by Tiana and her world.

The Princess and the Frog introduced Tiana as an ambitious New Orleans waitress working toward her dream of opening her own restaurant. Anika Noni Rose provided Tiana’s voice in the original animated film.

Domingo is an accomplished stage writer and performer in addition to his film and television career. O’Hara is known for his extensive theater work and for directing the Broadway production of Slave Play.

Disney has not announced a director, cast, production schedule, or release date for the developing movie.

Further details are expected once negotiations move forward.
