Backrooms creator and director Kane Parsons has clarified his current relationship with A24 and the future of the horror franchise.
Parsons says A24 holds the rights to any future Backrooms film or television project that he plans to develop based on his version of the property.
The filmmaker also addressed A24’s recently announced artificial-intelligence research partnership with Google DeepMind. Parsons said he does not support the agreement and made clear that its resources and technology will not cross over into any hypothetical future Backrooms projects under his direction.
Parsons has previously spoken strongly against generative AI, saying that he receives no creative satisfaction from using the technology and would prefer to see it disappear entirely.
A24 has defended its Google partnership as an attempt to develop filmmaking tools while preserving artistic control. The studio says the research is intended to involve filmmakers directly in shaping how the technology is created and used.
The distinction is important because the wider Backrooms concept originated as an anonymous internet phenomenon. A24’s agreement relates to Parsons’ specific interpretation, including the mythology and narrative world established through his viral Kane Pixels video series and feature film.
No sequel or television project has received an official release date.
