Gurei is preparing to bring its demanding, samurai-inspired combat to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC on July 23, 2026.

Developed by Lobo Sagaz Studio, the hand-drawn action game follows Rei, a human spirit tasked with hunting powerful entities known as the Kami.

Each Kami is inspired by elements of Japanese mythology and represents a different combat challenge. Players are free to confront the bosses in any order rather than following a fixed progression path.

That choice directly affects the difficulty of the journey. Gurei uses a dynamic difficulty system that adjusts each Kami’s strength based on when the player chooses to fight them.

A boss encountered early in one playthrough could become the final and most dangerous opponent in another route.

Defeating a Kami allows Rei to absorb its power and unlock a new ability. Those abilities can then be used to approach later fights with different strategies and movement options.

The defeated Kami also remain connected to Rei throughout the adventure. Their personalities and conversations provide additional information about the world, its lore and the game’s mechanics.

Gurei features a hand-drawn visual style, fluid animation and combat built around timing, precision, patience and adaptability.

The game draws inspiration from classic Japanese samurai cinema while placing its story inside a world where the human and spirit realms have begun to collide.

A free demo is available on supported storefronts ahead of launch.

Gurei releases July 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam.
