Universal Pictures has set an August 6, 2027 theatrical release date for Snoop, the upcoming biographical film based on the life and career of Snoop Dogg.

Jonathan Daviss, known for playing Pope Heyward in Outer Banks, will portray the rapper in the film.

Snoop is being described as the definitive biopic of the artist, business figure and gangsta rap icon. The film is expected to explore his rise from Long Beach, California, to becoming one of the most recognizable figures in hip-hop and popular culture.

Craig Brewer will direct the project. His previous films include Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name and Song Sung Blue.

Brewer also rewrote the screenplay from an earlier draft by Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The movie will have access to music from Snoop Dogg’s catalogue, allowing the story to include songs connected to different stages of his career.

Snoop rose to wider attention through his appearances on Dr. Dre’s 1992 album The Chronic before releasing his debut album Doggystyle the following year.

His career later expanded beyond music into acting, television, business, sports, media and ownership of Death Row Records.

Snoop Dogg will produce the film alongside Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment and Sara Ramaker, president of Death Row Pictures.

The project is the first film developed through Death Row Pictures’ overall agreement with NBCUniversal Entertainment.

Universal has not revealed which parts of Snoop Dogg’s life will receive the most attention. Additional casting and production details have also not been announced.

Snoop opens in theaters on August 6, 2027.
