Halo: Campaign Evolved, awarding Halo Studios’ remake a score of 7 out of 10.
Reviewed by NiteFade on PC, the game was praised for preserving the combat that made the original Halo: Combat Evolved one of the most influential console shooters ever released.
I found that fighting the Covenant and the Flood remains enjoyable 25 years later. The familiar combination of weapons, enemy behavior, vehicle combat and cooperative play continues to provide the flexible sandbox action associated with the Halo series.
The remake rebuilds the original campaign with Unreal Engine 5, bringing new environments, cinematics, animations, lighting and greater visual detail to Master Chief’s first journey across the Halo ring.
Campaign Evolved also includes Operation: METEORITE, a three-mission prequel story featuring Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson. I described the additional missions as an enjoyable few hours of familiar Halo action.
Several modern mechanics have been introduced, including sprinting, vehicle hijacking, a drivable Wraith tank and nine additional weapons taken from later Halo games.
Despite those additions, I felt that most of the changes outside the graphical overhaul were too subtle to transform the original experience.
The review also criticized the remake for being a relatively lean package. Campaign Evolved does not include competitive multiplayer, while Halo: The Master Chief Collection already offers the original campaign alongside a much larger collection of Halo content and multiplayer modes.
I concluded that the remake remains fun because the foundation of the original Halo campaign is still exceptionally strong. However, much of that praise belongs to the enduring quality of the 2001 game rather than major innovations introduced by Campaign Evolved.
For returning players, the remake provides a polished journey through familiar territory with several new missions and modern improvements. For newcomers, particularly PlayStation players receiving their first mainline Halo release, it offers an accessible introduction to Master Chief’s original adventure.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is available now for Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5. It is also included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
