The domestic box office is officially on track to surpass $10 billion in 2026, marking the first time North American ticket sales have reached that milestone since 2019.
The stronger year has been driven by a wide range of releases rather than a single dominant franchise. Major animated films, superhero titles, horror breakouts, original productions, and event movies have all contributed to the theatrical recovery.
Toy Story 5 delivered the biggest domestic opening of the year with $160 million, while films including Backrooms, Obsession, Project Hail Mary, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have shown strong staying power at the box office.
The summer season has also performed ahead of 2025 and remained within reach of pre-pandemic 2019 levels despite several individual releases falling below expectations.
Upcoming films including The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday are expected to help sustain momentum through the remainder of the year.
Although attendance and revenue have not completely returned to every pre-pandemic benchmark, crossing $10 billion would represent one of the clearest signs yet that the domestic theatrical market is continuing to recover.
